Introduction With support from Cushman and Wakefield, Plan India intervened in the Tsunami affected area of Nagapattinam district along with its implementing partner REAL to restore the right to education for the children affected by the Tsunami. The funds generated were utilized for construction of a totally washed away government high school in Chandrapadi village and renovation of partially destroyed Ramarmadan Udavi Nadunilaipalli Middle school in Periyakuthai village.
Government High school in Chandrapadi village The Chandrapadi Govt. High School which had a total strength of 257 students (Boys – 137, Girls – 120) was functioning partially in a concrete building and partially in a thatched shed before the Tsunami. At the time of Tsunami, the thatched shed collapsed and the concrete building eroded. While initial relief efforts were made by the implementing partner to reopen the school by constructing a temporary shed of 1500 sq. ft., however soon the community and Plan realized the need for a separate school in a child friendly healthy environment with more space so that the students could enjoy their childhood, develop their talents and perform better in their academic career. In the light of Plan’s focus to make a better world for children and community realization that a temporary shed should be replaced with a new school building, a building that would provide children opportunities to be nurtured in a safe and protective environment. The idea of a safe and protective environment was to have a building that meets all needs of children and helps in their development process.
