Supporting Plan India to rehabilitate the children who have been affected with tsunami

With support from Nokia, Plan India intervened in the Tsunami affected area of Nagapattinam district along with its implementing partner Treart (Real, Create & Care) to rehabilitate children of 40 villages affected by the Tsunami. The funds generated were utilized in Renovation/reconstruction of two schools , Support for vulnerable children/orphans ,Water and sanitation facilities at 13 schools , Support for 34 childcare centers , Health Camps (For lactating mothers and children) ,Community level awareness camps on disaster preparedness and hygiene camps , Children Club activities , Formation and strengthening of Self Help Groups, Establishing children resource center

RENOVATION OF SCHOOL BUILDINGS
With the timely assistance from Nokia the renovation of two school buildings (Panchayat Union Elementary School at South Palpannaicherry and Panchayat Union School at Koolayar) has been completed and now children are using the newly renovated facilities that ensure safe and comfortable learning. It has benefited around 500 children from the class 1-5 in ensuring the right to education and safe zone for learning. Children are very happy to attend school now as earlier they found it very difficult to attend classes that were conducted in a congested place and under the trees in the open ground. The renovation of the schools has put them at ease in concentrating and attending their classes on a day to day basis.

CONSTRUCTION OF CHILD CARE CENTRES:
Having successfully completed the renovation of school buildings our partners have started the construction of permanent Child Care Centres in the villages affected by Tsunami.  All the 17 centres have been completed and children are now enjoying their newly built facilities in the villages. These new centres are more child friendly with necessary basic amenities that ensures proper and safe space for play and creativity and also in improving their health conditions. Measures are being taken to make these centres more inclusive so as to align these centres with the ICDS scheme towards long term support and management.
